There were four-day and three-day long weekends over the Christmas and New Years holidays respectively. Around this time they release several new movies in hopes of clinching the Oscars. This year, I mean last year, seems to see a bumper crop. Many of them have had great reviews.
Over the Xmas weekend we saw Tin Tin and Mission Impossible. I was hugely disappointed in both. Over the New Year weekend we saw Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy and The Artist. Both were good. I liked The Artist better, only because one, it is in black and white and is silent; reminiscent of silent movies era and two, we had seen a better TV version of Tinker,Taylor, Soldier, Spy in five to seven episode serial with Alec Guinness as Smiley in late seventies or early eighties. The story is too complicated to be cohisively compressed in two hours of screen time.
But it was an escape.
