King Leopold's Ghost
by Adam Hochschild:
I just finished this book and am still shaking with horror and disgust.
This is an honest and gripping account of terror inflicted on the people of the Congo by the Belgium royalty, King Leopold II. It started in late nineteenth century and switched hands after his death in 1909. Many more European nation miscreants had their hands in it too.
It is about the raping of natural resources of Africa. In the Congo it was, Rubber.
After the king's death new entities took over under the banner of reform but horror continued, albeit in different form.
The Congo's independence changed two things. Its name changed from the Congo to Zaire. And locals took over the reign. Sadly, the country continues to be raped even by the locals.
I know now, what I did not before reading this book, is: Humanitarianism is not same as Human Rights.
Good book, well written.
